China’s customs requirements

All shipments to China require accurate customs documentation. These forms need to be detailed to make sure your parcels avoid being delayed or rejected.

You’ll need to complete a commercial invoice. Your courier service will be able to provide these documents for you.

Complete these in as much detail. For example, instead of listing ‘clothes’ as the product description, write ‘4 x white cotton t-shirts, made in the UK’. This detail helps speed along checks at the border and means your items are less likely to be delayed.

If it’s a gift, note this on the form – gifts up to the value of 1,000 Yuan (around £111) are exempt from customs fees, so the recipient won’t have to pay the usual charges for importing the parcel.

Any delivery up the value of 500 Yuan (around £56) should also be exempt from customs charges. However, shipments valued at over 1,000 Yuan may be subject to a formal customs check, so they may take slightly longer to arrive.

Banned imports to China

Before organising your shipment to China, check your items aren’t prohibited from import. If you attempt to send restricted items, your package could be returned to you at a charge or even destroyed at the border.

Some examples of China’s restricted items include:

  • Liquids with over 24% alcohol volume
  • Currency including coins and banknotes
  • Some foods and animal products
  • Certain medicines

However, it’s worth checking the comprehensive list of restricted imports before attempting to send your items. This is available on the Chinese government’s dedicated customs website.

Addressing parcels to China

If you’re unable to label your package in the local Chinese language and characters, you can do so in the traditional English address format, with a few small changes.

The receiver’s title and name appear on the first line of the address. The house number, street and city go on the second line, with the area code appearing before the province on the third line.

‘CHINA’ should then appear on the fourth line in block capitals.

For example,

Mr Zhang Sang
10 Yuzhi Rd Beijing
100010 ChaoYang District

What items are prohibited to send to China?

Just like any other country, China does have restrictions over what can be imported to the country. Things that cannot be imported include alcohol over 24%, currency, some foods and certain medicines. A full list can be found here – http://english.customs.gov.cn/home/index. Whilst these goods are prohibited for import, solutions can be found in some circumstances, contact your local service centre for more information.

What ways are there to get an item sent to China?

Shipments to China are sent by air or sea by PACK & SEND. For more information on how we offer these services follow this link – https://www.packsend.co.uk/business-solutions/international-freight-and-shipping/.

How long will my things take to reach China?

Just like with shipping to any country, the time it takes to ship to China can be very variable as a result of customs clearance. We do have some estimates of how long things might take to reach China. By sea we estimate things to take 8-10 weeks and by an estimated air 7-9 days.
