CUSTOMS REQUIREMENTS FOR GREECE

Before sending goods to Greece, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the nation’s import regulations, as well as the additional rules imposed by the European Union.

Shipping to Greece has become slightly more complex post-Brexit, with extra checks, tariffs, and regulations. Parcels entering Europe from the UK are now subject to customs duties and VAT, which are typically charged to the recipient.

UK-based senders are required to include a commercial invoice when shipping products. This document helps customs officials determine whether imported items are subject to import duties and, if so, how much to charge.

Find out how Brexit affects your shipping plans and costs on our dedicated page. At PACK & SEND, we’re here to provide the right packing and shipping solutions for your needs.

Some packages may be exempt from customs charges, such as personal effects and gifts, provided they meet the EU’s import regulations.

Make sure your package complies with Greece’s Customs Duty and VAT regulations by following the shipping instructions issued by the General Directorate of Customs and Excise Duty. For further details, consult their website.

Key considerations include:

  • Accurately completing customs paperwork – ensure all sections are filled in correctly and information is placed in the appropriate fields.
  • Avoiding prohibited or restricted items.
  • Providing detailed descriptions of your items. For example, instead of stating “clothes,” specify “2 x men’s cotton shirts, made in France”.
  • Including the necessary licences and certificates for your shipment.

PACK & SEND has extensive experience meeting Greek import criteria and works closely with clients to ensure full compliance.

SHIPPING RESTRICTIONS TO GREECE

In addition to Greece’s specific import regulations, EU-wide rules impose further requirements when shipping goods.

Be sure to check what items are permitted, in what quantities, and which items are prohibited. Failure to comply may result in parcels being returned or destroyed, often with additional costs.

Examples of restricted or prohibited items include:

  • Prohibited: Narcotics, counterfeit goods, and weapons.
  • Restricted: Alcohol, tobacco products, and certain food items such as meat, milk, and dairy, which often require additional documentation.

For detailed guidance, consult the Hellenic Customs Authority website.

ADDRESSING PARCELS TO GREECE

Correct formatting of delivery addresses is essential to avoid delays. When shipping to Greece, use the format below:

  • The recipient’s name should be on the first line.
  • Include the street name and property number on the second line.
  • The postcode should be written on the same line as the city or locality name, with a space between the third and fourth digits.
  • Write GREECE in capital letters on the last line.

For example:

Recipient’s Name

Alkamenou 78

157 840 ATHENS

GREECE

Include your return address on the opposite side of the package to the delivery address.
