Before sending goods to Guernsey, make sure you understand its import regulations. Although Guernsey is not part of the UK or the EU, the additional rules imposed by the EU still apply for goods being shipped to or through its member states.
Shipping to Guernsey has remained relatively straightforward post-Brexit, but there are still regulations to follow, including the requirement of a commercial invoice for UK-based senders. This document helps Guernsey’s customs officials determine whether imported items are subject to duties or VAT and calculate any applicable charges.
Find out how Brexit affects your shipping plans and costs on our dedicated page. At PACK & SEND, we’re here to help you find the right packing and shipping solution for your package.
Some packages may be exempt from customs charges, such as personal effects and items intended as gifts, provided they meet the specific requirements.
Common mistakes to avoid include:
Failing to fill in the paperwork correctly (e.g., placing information in the wrong sections or missing fields).
Sending prohibited or restricted items.
Providing vague item descriptions – for example, instead of saying ‘clothes’, specify: ‘2 x men’s cotton shirts, made in Ireland’.
Shipping items without the necessary licences or certificates.
At PACK & SEND, we know exactly how to meet Guernsey’s import criteria and work closely with our customers to ensure their shipments are fully compliant.
Guernsey enforces its own specific regulations on imported goods, with certain restrictions similar to those of the UK and EU.
Take time to understand exactly what items can be imported, in what quantities, and which items are prohibited. Always check restricted items and size or quantity allowances before shipping. Items that do not comply may be destroyed or returned to you at your expense.
Examples of restricted and prohibited items include:
Alcohol spirits are subject to strict quantity limits.
Weapons and firearms are heavily restricted.
Meat, milk, and dairy products are subject to stringent controls, particularly if not originating from approved sources.
If you’re unsure whether your items are permitted, check the Guernsey Customs and Excise website for detailed guidance.
When shipping to Guernsey, the address format closely resembles that of the UK. The recipient’s name should be on the first line, followed by the property number/name and street address or PO Box. The city/town name should appear on the next line, followed by the postcode. Finally, write GUERNSEY in capital letters on the last line.
For example: Mr A Smith Town View, Stopford Road St Peter Port GY1 1AA GUERNSEY
Always include your return address on the opposite side of the package to the delivery address.
